Honey bees are arguably among the most complex insects on earth, both in terms of their individual behavior, and of the social organization of their societies. Furthermore, they are among the best studied insects, and have fascinated human thought since the antiquity. In 1987 R. Menzel and A. Mercer edited a comprehensive book on neurobiology and behavior of honey bees, which was for many years the reference for scholars at large. However, in the last 25 years, research has made tremendous progress: Molecular biology and the sequencing of the genome have helped to link molecular and neural architectures underlying behavior. Optophysiological imaging technology and multielectrode electrophysiology allowed for simultaneous recording of many neurons to study functional principles of neural networks in the bee brain. New experimental paradigms revealed amazing cognitive sophistication, showing that the bee is capable of solving problems that have been so far considered the prerrogative of vertebrates. The development of new Doppler-radar technologies has allowed to track freely flying bees over considerable distances, thus introducing new vistas in the study of bee navigation and spatial representation in the insect brain. This book covers these and other topics providing a state-of-the-art vision of honey bee biology. The most renowned specialists converge here to illustrate that the honey bee is by now an established model system for neuroscience and behavior, and to provide an inspiring outlook toward the future, including commentaries to each section that are intended as seeds for further research. The sections social organization, communication and navigation, brain anatomy and physiology, sensory systems, genetics and molecular biology and learning and memory create both a reference work and a textbook not only for those interested in honey bees but also for entomologists at large, and for those which, in different species, try to unravel the links between neurosciences and behavior.

With its combination of cartoonish monster-movie makeup and oversized costumes, ear-splitting amplification and gleeful songs in praise of sex, heavy metal rock legend Kiss has never been accused of not being excessive, and this book is a great example of why it is still a multimillion-dollar profit-making machine. While this book covers much of the same biographical territory as Gene Simmons's Kiss and Make-Up and Kisstory (the band's self-published 440-page coffee-table-sized tome), the authorized bio presents more than enough new material to make it essential for hardcore fans. Much of the book's first half presents a previously unpublished work based on the only in-depth interviews the band gave in 1980. The result is a remarkably humanizing look behind the heavy metal tomfoolery, with Simmons more honestly discussing his Jewish upbringing than he does in his autobiography, and the rest of the band disarmingly admitting to borrowing from the glam-rocker New York Dolls as well as the Harlem Globetrotters. The book's second half, however, is the true highlight for Kiss fans: a comprehensive look at all of the Kiss albums ever made. Among the surprises is the praise of noted producer Eddie Kramer, a close associate of Jimi Hendrix, for the band's no-nonsense work ethic. Of note are Kiss's hilariously guileless quotes, such as the admission that another producer "made a point of trying to get us to stop writing songs about getting laid, which was valid. But he needed to understand that's all we ever did."

Although dedicated rock readers familiar with previous KISS tell-alls--most notably, tongue-man Gene Simmons' Kiss and Make-Up (2001)--may question whether there is much behind the band's kabuki-ish make-up besides being an ace gimmick, this slobbering devotional is worthwhile. For one thing, it packs all the major elements of Kisstory into one breezy package. For another, the PowerPoint-ish organization of the text facilitates easy reading. Sure, Leaf and Sharp find incredible depth and talent where others might miss it (they particularly adore the platform-booted anthem, "Rock and Roll All Nite"), but they state right up front, "nonbelievers--this book isn't for them." There are enough believers--members of the "KISS Army"--to make this surefire bait for the elusive testosterone-infused demographic. Mike Tribby

"In this book, an expanded revision of his 1992 work, Cousens endeavors to make his readers aware of how their food choices affect their bodies, minds, emotions, and spiritual life. He emphasizes there is no one-diet-fits-all approach, but rather a consciousness on the part of the individual of what works. He includes information on the oxidative, autonomic, ayurvedic, anabolic-catabolic, endocrine, blood-type, and acid base diet systems. In personalizing a diet, the individual needs to answer these questions:

• Am I emotionally stable after eating?
• Do I have increased physical energy after eating?
• Am I craving any foods?

"Cousens details studies where poor diets were fed to indigenous groups such as the Kurds, Yemenites, and Zulus. The indigenous people studied had been introduced to highly refined carbohydrate foods and suffered from degenerative conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. He points to a diet of fast, frozen, and processed foods, adopted by Americans and peoples of most industrialized nations, as one that is inadequate. He characterizes this diet as one loaded with refined sugar, white flour, and pesticides.

"The author establishes guidelines for healthy eating by recommending that people consume natural, whole, and organic foods and that the diet be primarily fresh, live raw foods. He advocates a high-complex-carbohydrate, low-protein, and low-fat regimen with attention to receiving adequate sunlight. Deep breathing, bathing, and contact with nature in the form of gardening or hikes all have therapeutic effects.

"In this era where so many things are condensed or encapsulated, reading a book with 850 pages is a daunting task. In this case, it's worth the effort. In Conscious Eating Gabriel Cousens has compiled a handbook that emphasizes the benefits of a raw food diet. He has woven together many philosophies from around the world and incorporated them into a body-mind-spirit program that will be beneficial to the individual and to all mankind. The book is a valuable reference tool that belongs in every vegetarian's library."
